What's a home generator?
A standby home generator keeps your power on during an outage. It’s installed outside your house (like an AC unit) and comes on automatically — whether you’re home or away. All within seconds of a power outage.
Plus home generators run on propane or natural gas, so there’s no refueling.
Power up to keep costs down.
Severe weather is the single leading cause of power outages in the United States. The amount and severity of these outages has spiked dramatically over the past decade, causing physical, emotional and economic hardship for many Americans. Here is a look at the cost of power outages in the U.S., as well as some helpful tips on how to protect your home and family during the next big outage.
How much is this going to cost?
A home generator plus installation typically starts under $6,000. However, the total cost will vary based on your power and installation needs.
When shopping standby home generators, your checklist should include generator size, costs, permits and installation. But don’t worry. Your KOHLER dealer will handle all the details, so you don’t have to.
Before the power goes out.
Your automatic transfer switch (ATS) monitors the electricity coming from the utility. It's working 24/7 to protect your home.
This handy little device is located on your automatic transfer switch. It tells you where your home’s power is coming from — utility or generator.
Your KOHLER® generator will exercise itself and run diagnostic tests for 20 minutes each week to make sure it’s ready when needed. And guess what? It happens automatically.
The Power Goes Out.
When the power fails or drops below an acceptable level (brownout), the ATS signals the generator to start. In seconds, the ATS transfers your power from the utility to the generator.
10-Second Response, No Refueling.
By the time you read this, your KOHLER generator will have started and restored power to your home.
Your generator powers your home.
Your generator then supplies your home with electricity until the utility power is restored.
KOHLER generators endure hundreds of tests (during design and production) before they reach your home. The result is total reliability.
With PowerBoost Technology, KOHLER generators can handle large starting loads like central air conditioners without dropping power to other appliances.
Inside every KOHLER generator is a commercial-grade engine built to withstand extreme workloads. We’ll keep your house comfortable as long as the power’s out.
We eat, sleep and breathe quality.
Every KOHLER generator is meticulously quality-tested start to finish. First, our engineering team runs hundreds of performance tests during our design process. Everything’s examined — down to the bolt.
Once the generator design passes our inspection, it’s ready for production. But before it leaves our factory, we put it through the paces one more time. The result is total reliability.
We build them to outlast the outage.
Inside every KOHLER generator is a commercial-grade engine built to withstand extreme workloads over many years. (Think heavy-duty construction equipment.)

We’re nearly 100. And only getting better with age.
We built our first generator in 1920. Since then we’ve had one simple goal: build the best generators in the world.
Most installations take a day or two. And your KOHLER dealer will take care of it all. They’ll coordinate a team of licensed electricians and pipefitters to make sure the job’s done right. Here’s how it works:
Here’s how it works:
- The electrician will install your transfer switch first.
- After that's installed, the team will move your generator in place.
- Electric lines will then be connected from your transfer switch to your generator.
- Once electric is hooked up, your pipefitter will make the proper connections from the fuel source to the generator.
- After electric and fuel is hooked up, your generator is ready to start and protect your business.
How much will it cost?
Installation costs vary significantly from home to home due to the ease/difficulty of installing your fuel source (propane or natural gas). A simple installation can start at $2,000, but costs may be substantially more based on individual situations. We recommend a professional site survey for a more accurate quote.
What about permits?
Kick your feet up and rest easy. Your KOHLER dealer will handle all local permits and ordinances so you don’t have to.
